Educational Evaluations When Dyslexia is Suspected: We Do More Than Just "Test” for Eligibility!

Presented by Danielle Stanley

Danielle Stanley had five years of classroom experience teaching students at both elementary and middle school levels in general education and self-contained programs before she pursued and obtained her Master’s Degree in Special Education from Rider University and her LDT/C certification from The College of New Jersey. Danielle is currently pursuing her Ph.D. in Special Education from Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She is a member of NCED and employed as a LDT/C in a public school district. She has taught two semesters at Rider University as an adjunct instructor and is currently an adjunct instructor at Georgian Court University, where she teachers in the LDT/C program. Her research interests include learning disabilities, reading strategy instruction, note-taking, dyslexia, and teacher preparation.

Participants in this workshop will discuss a framework from which LDT/Cs can plan out an educational evaluation when the child study team referral indicates a suspicion of dyslexia/reading disability. We will discuss a whole-child approach to the evaluation process and the critical skills that should be informally and formally assessed, and explore a non-exhaustive collection of standardized tests and informal sources of data that may complement existing evaluation toolkits. We will use case studies to navigate the entire process, from referral to IEP implementation, and discuss how to effectively plan for that student using evaluation results. Participants are encouraged to bring a case study or two from their own experience to discuss in small groups.
