Diagnosing Dyslexia

Presented by Alison Pankowski

Alison Pankowski completed her undergraduate work in Deaf Education and elementary education at Flagler College in St. Augustine, Florida. She received her Master's degree in Special Education from Rutgers University in New Brunswick, and did post-graduate work at The College of New Jersey, receiving her LDT/C certificate. Ms. Pankowski is an IDA-certified dyslexia therapist and an author of The New Jersey Dyslexia Handbook. She has worked in the special education field in New Jersey public schools since 1995. During that time, she has held a variety of positions, including in-class support co-teacher, resource center instructor, self-contained class teacher, LDT/C, and reading interventionist. She has trained teachers in the Wilson Reading System, and serves as vice president of the New Jersey branch of the International Dyslexia Association. She is also the education director of Beyond Communication, LLC.
Can schools diagnose/identify dyslexia? Yes! A multidisciplinary team with knowledge and background knowledge in psychology, language development, reading acquisition and dyslexia can make this determination in the public schools. This session will discuss the cognitive, linguistic and academic skills that are essential components to be evaluated in a comprehensive assessment. Specific examples of possible testing tools will be identified. Patterns of testing results with interpretive comments will be shared that determine the diagnosis of dyslexia.
