Structured Literacy and Dyslexia Interventions

Presented by: Alison Pankowski, LDT/C
Ms. Pankowski is an IDA certified dyslexia therapist and an author of the New Jersey Dyslexia Handbook. She has worked in the special education field in N.J. public schools since 1995. During that time, she has held a variety of positions, including in-class support co-teacher, resource center instructor, self-contained class teacher, LDT/C, and reading interventionist. She has trained teachers in the Wilson Reading System, and serves as vice president of the New Jersey branch of the International Dyslexia Association. She is also the education director of Beyond Communication, LLC.

Both proponents of Response to Intervention (RTI) models and proponents of cognitive neuropsychology agree that earlier intervention and the use of evidence-based intervention techniques are essential in efforts to remediate struggling learners. One of the purposes of assessment is to use the results to make data-based decisions for intervention planning. For students with dyslexia, it is essential that interventions prepare them to decode and encode words in a systematic, sequential, multisensory manner. This approach not only helps students with dyslexia, but there is evidence that it is effective for all students. This workshop will define Structured Literacy and identify the essential elements of instruction. In addition, several Structured Literacy programs used in schools will be reviewed.
