Universal Screening and Early Dyslexia Identification

Presented by: Alison Pankowski
Alison Pankowski completed her undergraduate work in Deaf Education and Elementary Education at Flagler College in St. Augustine, Florida. She received her Masters in Special Education from Rutgers University in New Jersey. Mrs. Pankowski completed her post-graduate work at The College of New Jersey to obtain her Learning Disabilities Teacher Consultant (LDTC) certificate and her Supervisor certificate. She is an IDA Certified Dyslexia Therapist. Mrs. Pankowski has worked in the special education field since 1995 in New Jersey public schools. During that time, she has held a variety of positions including in-class support co-teacher, resource center instructor, self-contained teacher, LDTC and Reading Interventionist. Mrs. Pankowski currently trains teachers in her district in the Wilson Reading System and she is the current Vice President of the New Jersey branch of the International Dyslexia Association. Mrs. Pankowski is also the Education Director at Beyond Communication, LLC.

The New Jersey Dyslexia Handbook: A Guide to Early Literacy Development & Reading Struggles was created to provide assistance to educators and families about dyslexia, early literacy development, and best practices for identification, instruction and accommodation of students with reading difficulties. This workshop will review the potential indicators of dyslexia, discuss the benefits of universal screening of all students, and identify the skills screening tools should include for kindergarten, first and second grade. The presentation will look at various screening tools by name and compare tools discussed. In addition, this workshop will discuss follow up assessments for progress monitoring and a more diagnostic evaluation following a Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) model.
