Part 1 - Introduction to the Science of Reading
Description: Using the simple view of reading (SVR) and Scarborough’s reading
rope as a foundation,this presentation will provide an introduction to
the science of reading. Participants will develop their understanding of the
science of reading and be able to readily apply and share with administrators,
classroom teachers, and parents in their role of LDT-C or school psychologist.
Resources will be provided.
May 12 Part
2 - Using the Reading Rope to Inform IEP PLAAFP and Goals/Objectives
Description: Using Scarborough’s reading rope as a foundation, this presentation
will explain the reading strands and how they can be utilized in developing
comprehensive PLAAFP statements and incorporating the science of reading into
IEP goals/objectives for their students.
June 16 Part
3 - Incorporating the Science of Reading into Our Consultation
Description: LDT-Cs and School Psychologists are consultants
to various individuals within the educational system. This presentation will
provide the necessary science of reading tools and resources to enhance consultation
practices in supporting students' reading abilities.
Presenter:
Danielle Frith is an alumna of Monmouth University, where she majored in
special education and minored in psychology. She is a Wilson level I certified
instructor. She obtained her master’s degree in special education from
Rider University in 2009 and is a certified Learning Disabilities
Teacher-Consultant. Currently, she is a full-time specialist professor at
Monmouth University and an adjunct instructor at Rider University. Danielle is
working towards attaining her PhD in special education from Temple University
and recently completed a LEND Fellowship at the Children’s Hospital of
Philadelphia. Her research interests include dyslexia, assessment, science of
reading, teacher preparation and learning disabilities. She presents both
locally and nationally on a variety of topics related to special education.
Presenter: Eli Freund is the immediate
NJASP Past President. He has been a school psychologist for over 16 years and a
supervisor of special education for over 5 years. He currently is a school
psychologist for the New York City Department of Education. Eli is working
towards achieving a Psy.D. in School Psychology from Georgian Court University.
Outside of being a practicing school psychologist in the public schools, Eli is
the founder/owner of NeuroEducational Consulting Group LLC. They consult with
public schools on UDL implementation, writing stronger IEPs, bilingual
assessments and developing special education programs.
